With all of your generous donations and sponsorships, as well as the fundraising efforts of all three teams and the GSBC Raas Garba organizing committee, we have managed to raise a total of $45,000.00 but we are still short. This means that although we will pay for the travel and accommodations of the participants, the food will not be covered. All participants will need to pay for their own food during the trip. Again, your generous donations will be much appreciated.

Last Chance to Register for Sports Programs at the Gujarati Cultural Festival!

Thank you all for your ongoing support of the GSBC’s participation in the Gujarati Cultural Festival! As you know, this festival has become so much more than a dance competition. This year, 4 sports competitions have been added to the mix: Badminton, Volleyball, Hockey, and Cricket. We are hoping, with the help of all GSBC members that Vancouver will have a strong presence both for the Dance and Sports portion of this festival. Below is all the up-to-date information on the sports programs:

Sports Competition Information

All of the competitive sports will take place at the Genesis Sports Complex. Transportation will be provided to all out of town participants to and from the designated hotel, Holiday Inn.

Badminton – Ages 16 +

Calgary is planning on having 3 categories for the badminton component of the competition: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, and Mixed doubles. There will be a round robin format followed by a knockout playoffs round.

Volleyball – Ages 16 +

The volleyball tournament will be made up of Indian and International style of play. There will be teams of minimum 8 and maximum of 12 players on each squad playing round robin format followed by a playoff round. Each match will go to 21 points and will be a rally-‐ point system. Each game must be won by a minimum of 2 points. Players are responsible for their own equipment (eg. knee pads etc.). A maximum of 2 teams per city is eligible to participate.

Floor Hockey – Ages 18+

(Men Only)

Floor hockey tournament will consist of 1 team from each participating city playing a round robin tournament followed by playoffs/final. The number of participating cities will determine the exact format of the tournament. All players will be required to wear helmets, shin pads and gloves. We will be playing 4 on 4, which will require each team to have a minimum of 6 players and a goalie. Each team is required to provide their own equipment. Only composite and plastic blades will be permitted by the facility.

Cricket – Ages 16+

For the first time in the competition’s history Calgary will be hosting an indoor cricket tournament. We have 2 indoor soccer fields within the Genesis Centre where the tournament will take place. Each participating team will be allowed to have 6 – 8 players. We will release more details once they are finalized.

Please contact Niraj Thakore via email (niraj.thakore@gmail.com) to confirm your participation in any of the aforementioned events. For the team events please read the minimum and maximum numbers required, and have the team captain provide me a list of all participants’ names and email addresses. If you are unable to form an entire team, we will do our best to join groups of individuals to form teams, however preference will be given to groups who can form an entire team on their own. Each sport participant will be required to pay a $10 registration fee. Register by Friday, July 20th.
